📣 Chrome Extension Roaming Client Update: Preparing for Google Manifest V3
Google is officially deprecating Manifest V2, the framework supporting Chrome extensions, in June 2025. This change affects all DNSFilter Chrome Extension Roaming Client deployments, requiring an update to ensure continued functionality and security.
This is a breaking change from Google. To maintain filtering and protection, complete the version 2.4.1 update now.
🚨 Immediate Action Required
Update to Version 2.4.1
DNSFilter has released an interim update (v2.4.1) to facilitate a seamless transition to the upcoming Manifest V3-based Chrome Extension Roaming Client.
To avoid disruptions, follow these steps:
- Chrome Auto-Updates Enabled: If Chrome Extension auto-updates are enabled, version 2.4.1 will install automatically—no action required!
- Manual Update Required: If auto-updates are disabled, manually update the Chrome Extension Roaming Client to version 2.4.1 following standard installation methods
Confirm what version of the Chrome Extension you’re running from the Roaming Client page in the DNSFilter dashboard.
For detailed instructions on installation, updating, and enabling auto-updates in the Google workspace, refer to Google’s official guides:
👀 Upcoming Changes in May 2025
DNSFilter will launch a new Chrome Extension Roaming Client (V3) built on Google’s Manifest V3 architecture.
- Automatic Installation: If Chrome Extension auto-updates are enabled, the V3 client will install automatically
- Prevent Duplicate Clients: Devices must be updated to version 2.4.1 before the V3 release to avoid duplicate Roaming Clients appearing in the DNSFilter dashboard.
For educational institutions, ensure that devices are upgraded to the V3 client before storage or shutdown at the end of the school year.
🗓️ June 2025 Deadline: Google’s Manifest V2 Deprecation
After June 2025, any Chrome Extension Roaming Clients still running on Manifest V2 will cease to function. To maintain DNS filtering and protection, it is essential to complete the version 2.4.1 update now and prepare for the V3 rollout in May.

Official comment
Thomas Sweet , thanks for reaching out, and excellent question! This update is exclusive to the DNSFilter Chrome Extension: all the other agents for operating systems like iOS or Windows won't be affected by Chrome's manifest updates, so you should be good to go 👍

Do we need this if using the roaming client? We have never used the chrome extension, and debug.dnsfilter.com reports as working.
