This article covers the Identity Connections management dashboard, connection status states, and how to edit and delete connections. For initial setup and provisioning, see Set up Identity Sync with Microsoft Entra.
Identity Connections dashboard
The Identity Connections dashboard is the central management view for all configured connections. Access it from the DNSFilter dashboard: navigate to Identities and select Identity Connections.
The dashboard displays the following columns by default:
- Identity Connection Name: the name assigned during setup
- Directory: the connected directory domain (for example, contoso.com)
- Status: the current provisioning state of the connection (see Connection status states below)
- Collections: the number of Collections associated with the connection
- Users: the number of users provisioned through the connection
- Last Activity: the timestamp of the most recent inbound sync event. Displays null if no sync events have been received. This value is informational only and does not affect connection status
- Actions: options to edit or delete the connection
Additional columns are available through column Preferences but are hidden by default.
Identity Connection status states
The Status column reflects the current provisioning state of each Identity Connection. The following states may appear:
| Status | Description |
|---|---|
| Pending | The connection was created and the background provisioning setup is still running. This is expected immediately after a connection is created and is not an error |
| No Data | The connection is set up but no users or groups have been provisioned yet |
| Error | An issue was encountered during provisioning. The next successful sync will clear the error state |
| Connected | The connection is active and users or groups have been provisioned successfully |
Entra provisioning status states
When a connection is opened or edited, the detail page displays the provisioning status reported directly by Microsoft Entra. This is separate from the connection status in the Identity Connections management dashboard (above) and reflects what Entra reports about its own sync job.
| Status | Description |
|---|---|
| Active | The connection is running normally and syncing on schedule |
| In progress | A sync is currently running |
| Not started | The connection is set up but provisioning has not been started in the Entra portal |
| Not configured | Setup is incomplete. No users or groups have been assigned to sync |
| Paused | Provisioning was manually stopped |
| Quarantine | Entra has paused syncing due to repeated failures |
| Quarantine expired | Entra stopped retrying after an extended period of failures. The connection must be deleted and recreated to restore syncing |
Edit an Identity Connection
Editing an Identity Connection allows the connection name and description to be updated. All provider-issued values are read-only.
Two entry points open the Edit page:
- Select Edit from the Actions column of the connection row
- Select the connection name in the Identity Connection Name column
To edit a connection:
- From the Identity Connections grid, locate the connection and select Edit from the Actions column, or select the connection name
- Update the Name or Description fields as needed
- Select Save
Changes are saved and the grid reflects the updated connection name.
Delete an Identity Connection
Deleting an Identity Connection removes the associated Entra provisioning sync job and all provisioned users and groups from DNSFilter. This action cannot be undone.
Note: This behavior differs from the legacy Active Directory (AD) Sync Tool, which retained provisioned users when a sync was removed. Admins migrating from the AD Sync Tool should note that deleting an Identity Connection permanently removes all provisioned users and groups. The AD Sync Tool remains available and has not been deprecated; Identity Sync is recommended for new integrations.
Delete a single connection
- From the Identity Connections grid, locate the connection and select Delete from the Actions column
- In the confirmation dialog, type DELETE
- Select Delete Connection
The connection and all associated provisioned users and groups are removed from the platform.
Delete multiple connections
- From the Identity Connections grid, select the checkbox next to each connection to delete, or select the checkbox in the column header to select all
- Select Delete from the bulk actions menu
- In the confirmation dialog, type DELETE
- Select Delete Connection
The same downstream impact applies to bulk deletion—all provisioned users and groups associated with the selected connections are removed.
