Report or Query Log shows blank FQDN
Follow these steps to disable Root Hints, a DNS server feature that resolves DNS queries. Because DNSFilter resolves DNS traffic on the network's behalf, this setting becomes unnecessary and can cause Reporting and Query Log data to populate without a FQDN: the data will show a dot or ᐧ in that field.
Disable Root Hints
This article details two methods to disable Root Hints: through the Active Directory (or other Windows Server Manager) or Bind.
Active Directory
Follow Microsoft's documentation to configure Root Hints per your environment's needs. We recommend unchecking Use root hints if no forwarders are available in the Forwarders tab, but other methods are available.
Bind
In Bind, disable Root Hints by configuring it to forward only mode.
options {
forward only;
forwarders {
103.247.36.36;
103.247.37.37;
};
};
