DNSFilter + Azure Virtual Desktop Multi-Session
Hello,
We are trying to configure a DNSFilter policies on base of Microsoft Entra ID users/groups in a multi session environment in Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD). My question is if that is possible at the moment.
Our environment consists of :
- Azure Virtual Desktop
- Multiple Host pools
- Multiple Session hosts
- 50+ Entra ID users
We have already tried the configuration's steps “Update Azure VM configuration to install Windows Roaming Client” : https://help.dnsfilter.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/34196126281875
It seems not to work for us.
Please let me know if it is possible to use DNSFilter with Azure Virtual Desktop multi-session environment.
Thank you in Advance!

Hi Refer IT, thank you for your question and for sharing the details of your environment! I appreciate your efforts in trying to configure the Windows Roaming Client in Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD).
Currently, the DNSFilter Roaming Client is a per-device solution. In an RDS-style environment, such as AVD, where multiple users are active on a single machine, only one roaming client can operate per device. This means the client will always reflect the most recent user session, and multiple roaming clients cannot run simultaneously on the same machine.
Given these limitations, we recommend using a network deployment approach for environments like yours to allow DNS traffic to be forwarded to our filtering servers. However, please note that it does not provide reporting at an individual user level.
If you have additional questions, please let me know—I’m happy to help! We are actively working on enhancements to make our service more effective in these scenarios, so please be sure to upvote this feature and add any suggestions so that we can prioritize the right improvements.
