This article defines Filtering Policy settings found under Labs in the DNSFilter app.
Labs gives you access to powerful new capabilities we’re actively testing and refining. These features are designed to offer more control, insight, or performance—and a preview of what’s coming next.
Because these are still in development, we recommend enabling them only in environments where occasional instability is acceptable. Your feedback is invaluable during this phase and helps us shape their final release.
Check out other Filtering Policy options to see all the ways to configure your policy to meet your threat protection needs:
- Filter by category to block large lists of undesirable domains at once
- Enforce privacy safeguards on search engines and block ads, trackers, and third-party data collection to enhance user privacy and reduce distractions online
- Filter for Threats like Cryptomining, Malware, and Phishing
- Block common application's full domain list in a single click with AppAware, making it easy to block access to apps like Discord or GitLab
- Schedule Filtering Policies for specific times of day or week
Labs options
Blocked threats are indicated in blue and a icon, just like blocked categories or threats.
Navigate through these options in-app: From the DNSFilter dashboard, navigate to Policies and select Filtering. Select a new or existing Policy to edit, and tab to Labs to view these options.
| Beta Feature | Definition |
| Parked Sites & Domains | Sites/domain names that may no longer controlled by the original owner. These are often taken over by malicious third parties to host threats. |
| Uncategorized & Unknown Sites |
This setting controls whether or not to block domains that the system has not classified (including newly registered domains). It is off by default because many Content Servers and Content Distribution Networks (CDNs) are served from domains with no web content to scan but are important to end-user experience (Office Online documents, Dropbox uploads, etc.). |
| FirstSight Page Feature |
This is a unique feature of DNSFilter in the industry. This feature pauses users when they attempt to visit a domain that has not been seen before by our AI scanner. The scanner performs a real-time categorization of the domain and then allows the user to enter or denies entry based on Filtering Policy settings. This is an experimental feature and is off by default due to UX issues with Chrome. Toggle the switch on to enable this feature. |
