This article defines Filtering Policy settings found under the Advanced Extra Settings tab in the DNSFilter app. Use these options to block threat types like trackers, unknown sites, and malicious domains.
Check out other Filtering Policy options to see all the ways to configure your policy to meet your threat protection needs:
- Filter by category to block large lists of undesirable domains at once
- Enforce SafeSearch on search engines to filter out explicit content like adult content and graphic violence
- Filter for Threats like Cryptomining, Malware, and Phishing
- Block common application's full domain list in a single click with AppAware, making it easy to block access to apps like Discord or GitLab
- Schedule Filtering Policies for specific times of day or week
Advanced Extra Settings options
Blocked threats are indicated in Red and a 🚫 icon, just like blocked categories or threats.
Navigate through these options in-app: From the DNSFilter dashboard, navigate to Policies and select Filtering. Select a new or existing Policy to edit, and tab to Advanced > Extra Settings to view these options.
Extra Setting | Definition |
Advertising |
Sites or businesses which directly sell ads to consumer through various mediums - including Internet, TV, or radio. By turning this on you will encounter a NODATA response for blocked results instead of a block page. Set as Moderate to block advertisements from all domains except trusted ones (e.g. Google). In reporting this is labeled Advertising Lite. Set as Strict to block advertisements from all domains. In reporting this is labeled Advertising. |
Trackers |
Sites or businesses that use various techniques to track user behavior across the internet. By turning this on you will encounter a NODATA response for blocked results instead of a block page. Set as Moderate to block trackers from all domains except trusted ones (e.g. Google). In reporting this is labeled Trackers Lite. Set as Strict to block trackers from all domains. In reporting this is labeled Trackers. |
Parked Sites & Domains |
Sites/domain names that may no longer controlled by the original owner. These are often taken over by malicious third parties to host threats. |
Malicious Domain Protection | This feature leverages new Machine Learning capabilities to identify risky domain strings to secure against domain generation algorithms (DGA) and other threat vectors. This model will continue to be improved over time. |
Uncategorized & Unknown Sites |
This setting controls whether or not to block domains that the system has not classified (including newly registered domains). It is off by default because many Content Servers and Content Distribution Networks (CDNs) are served from domains with no web content to scan but are important to end-user experience (Office Online documents, Dropbox uploads, etc.). |
Interstitial Page Feature |
This is a unique feature of DNSFilter in the industry. This feature pauses users when they attempt to visit a domain that has not been seen before by our AI scanner. The scanner performs a real-time categorization of the domain and then allows the user to enter or denies entry based on Filtering Policy settings. This is an experimental feature and is off by default due to UX issues with Chrome. Toggle the switch on to enable this feature. |
Internet Watch Foundation and Project Arachnid Filtering |
Both IWF and Project Arachnid deal with blocking sites which host child pornography. This is automatically enforced on all accounts and cannot be turned off. ✍️ These domains are redacted from DNSFilter Reporting and the DNS Query Log. |
