Use this article to change the user account under which the DNSFilter Relay scheduled task runs in Windows Task Scheduler.
By default, the DNSFilter Relay scheduled task runs as the SYSTEM account, which allows it to start at system boot without requiring a user to be logged in. In some environments, running a service as SYSTEM may conflict with security policy or require a less privileged account.
Change the DNSFilter Relay task account
Changing the running account from SYSTEM to a standard user account removes the ability to start the Relay at system boot. The task will run at user log-in instead. To reflect this, the trigger should be updated from At startup to At log on in the steps below.
- Open Task Scheduler from the Start menu
- Locate the DNSFilterRelay task in the task list
- Right-click the task and select Properties
- Select the General tab and select Change User or Group
- Enter the desired account name and select OK
- Select the Triggers tab, open the existing trigger, and change At startup to At log on
- Select OK to save — a password prompt may appear depending on the account selected
The DNSFilter Relay task now runs under the specified account and will start at user log-in.
