Use this article to create and assign tags to Roaming Clients for grouping devices and applying filtering policies.
Tags allow administrators to organize devices (for example, Students, Teachers, or Servers) and simplify policy management across groups.
Add or update tags from the dashboard
Tags can be created and assigned directly from the Roaming Clients dashboard.
- From the DNSFilter dashboard, navigate to Deployments and select Roaming Clients
- Select one or more devices using the checkbox next to the hostname
- Select Edit
- Enter a tag value or select from existing tags
- Select Save to apply the changes
The selected devices will now include the assigned tag. After saving changes, confirm the tag appears in the Roaming Clients list or use filtering to validate that all intended devices are included.
Tagging during Windows deployment
For Windows deployments, tags can also be assigned during installation.
Included tags in the appsettings.override.json file alongside other deployment customizations. This allows devices to register with predefined tags during installation.
If tags are not applied during deployment, they can always be added or updated later from the dashboard.
Use tags to manage devices
After tags are applied:
- Use the filters menu to view devices by tag
- Assign or review policy configurations for grouped devices
- Update multiple devices at once using bulk edit
Tags provide a flexible way to organize devices without changing deployment structure.
