How to count licenses in DNSFilter
AnsweredHi to all,
I need an answer to the following questions:
What are estimated numbers of name resolution requests per user? And which ones for Access Point?
If an end customer exceeds these limits, how will we be notified?
I'll try to clarify:
When filtering a Site's traffic is set via Public IP, can DNS Filter be able to establish exactly the number of devices that use that DNS to surf the web?
Is it possible to establish the number of users?
I suppose that DNS Filter staff carries out checks on the traffic generated.
- If they view that the calculated numbers fall within a fair use range, all is OK.
- If these numbers are seldom higher than normal, all is OK.
- If these numbers are daily higher than normal, DNS filtering asks for increase the number of licenses. In this case, which is the notification method? And is the traffic blocked until the license update?
Example:
The XXX customer has 100 PCs that come out with DNS of DNS Filter and the licensed number is 100.
- For any reason the PCs/users become 105 or 110 and some of them are sometimes turned off and you should not receive any reminders as the traffic cannot be constantly estimated for several days!
- The PCs become 170 and you will receive the request for increase the number of licenses.
- In the presence of user access via Access Points, it is required to purchase at least a number of licenses equal to the number of Access Points themselves. Is this independent from WiFi device number? 30 is equal to 60?
I hope that what I have described is clear.
Thanks a lot to all and have a nice weekend!

Hi Paolo Biccheri,
The average resolution request is dynamically calculated based on the average daily queries per user across the entirety of DNSFilter, which is currently estimated at ~5,000 requests per day. As Access Points are estimated to be equivalent to about 5 users, you can determine about ~25,000 requests per day is typical. You can also find this estimate via the user count summary in-app! Learn how to navigate to this summary here.
If your usage appears to far exceed this amount, you can expect to be notified via email that it may be a good time to reevaluate your usage and redetermine licensing requirements; rest assured that any changes needing to be made to your account will be communicated first! Traffic will not be blocked unless there appears to be intentional negligence of use and no coordination with our team in reestablishing proper license allocation. This "overage" communication is not automatic though, so it's a good rule of thumb to review your usage regularly.
Regarding Site traffic via Public IP, there is not a definite way to estimate the numbers of devices or users based on traffic alone. However, with Roaming Clients, your deployment is per machine which does allow you to review traffic at a more granular level (see this article for more details on different deployment types and their capabilities).
I hope this helps!
