Understanding Uncategorized Sites and how to handle them
If you've encountered domains being blocked because they are labeled as "Uncategorized," you’re not alone! This can happen for a few reasons, and it’s important to understand why it occurs and how to address it within your DNSFilter policy.
Why Do Domains Become Uncategorized?
We often see domains labeled as "Uncategorized" when:
- The domain resolves to an error page or a blank page.
- The domain doesn't contain enough content for our AI to properly categorize it.
This can be common with Content Servers and Content Distribution Networks (CDNs), which may serve resources from domains that don’t host any traditional web content. Since there isn’t enough content for our AI to scan, these domains may be flagged as uncategorized.
Impact of Blocking Uncategorized Domains
If you’ve enabled the blocking of uncategorized domains (located in Advanced -> Extra Settings of your policy), you might notice that certain domains are blocked unexpectedly, which can sometimes cause functionality issues on websites using third-party resources.
🚨 Important Note: There’s a warning with this setting that blocking uncategorized domains may disrupt the loading of some resources from third-party domains.
