Assigning Filtering Policies to Specific Users
Filtering Policies in DNSFilter can be applied at different levels, allowing MSPs and IT admins to enforce different filtering rules for different users.
To apply a Filtering Policy to specific users (such as allowing Reddit access for some users but not others), follow these steps:
1️⃣ Determine the best attribute to assign the policy to:
- Users – If using directory-based authentication (e.g., Azure AD, Google Workspace), policies can be applied directly to users
- Roaming Clients – If users have DNSFilter's Roaming Client installed on their devices, policies can be applied per device
- Collections – Use Collections to group users or devices and apply policies accordingly
- Sites or Relays – Apply policies to specific locations or network relays where the users connect
2️⃣ Create a Filtering Policy for Reddit Access:
- From the DNSFilter dashboard, navigate to Policies > Filtering and select Add
- Enter a policy name (e.g., "Reddit Allowed Users")
- Under Allow List, add domains required for Reddit access (e.g.,
reddit.com
) - Configure other settings as needed
3️⃣ Assign the Policy to the Right Users or Devices:
- Navigate to Deployments and select the appropriate method (User, Roaming Client, Collection, etc.)
- Assign the new policy to the users who should have Reddit access
- Ensure the default policy still applies to all other users who should not have access
4️⃣ Verify & Test the Policy:
- Changes typically take effect within 15 minutes
- Use the DNS Query Log to confirm that Reddit traffic is allowed for the designated users
💡 Important Notes:
- Ensure that your default filtering policy continues blocking Reddit for users who shouldn’t have access
- If using Roaming Clients, check that devices are properly assigned to the correct policies
- Collections are useful for grouping devices or users without relying on directory-based authentication
