This article provides steps to create a Network Site, including pre-setup considerations and notes to help prevent connection errors.
A Site is a physical location–or network–that usually has a single IP address. Larger businesses or groups using multiple internet connections often work with an IP subnet.
Adding a Site to your DNSFilter dashboard is essential because DNSFilter operates a customer-only closed resolver: until you add a Site we can’t recognize or respond to your network’s queries.
Important Notes

Details |
Each Site can only have one assigned Filtering Policy or Filtering Schedule |
Use the Nat IPs feature to assign separate policies by LAN subnet |
Add the IP address before forwarding DNS to our resolvers. DNS forwarding without the correct IP configuration will return "unknown page" DNS queries, which block internet access until resolved | DNSFilter always allows access to our dashboard, so you can fix this error by clicking the Site's pencil icon and entering the IP address |
Dynamic IP address users must use Dynamic DNS (DDNS) to ensure DNSFilter always has the correct IP address for your network Services like Starlink, home ISPs (e.g. Verizon; Comcast), or even corporate networks often use shared or dynamic IPs. |
This means many customers might be using the same public IP at different times—and DNSFilter can’t allow that IP to be claimed across multiple accounts. Failure to utilize Dynamic DNS will result in DNS downtime because DNSFilter doesn’t serve requests to unknown IP addresses for security reasons |
The DNSFilter dashboard accepts IP subnets up to /24 |
Enter the block directly into the IP address field (ex: 45.66.23.0/24) |
During Site setup there is a toggle to Disable Roaming Clients. If you experience connectivity issues while using an active VPN enable this toggle to disable the Roaming Client |
The setting will only apply to this Site |
Add a Site
This section shows the process to add Sites individually. See Bulk Import Sites to add multiple Sites at once via .CVS file import.
Follow these steps to add a Site to the DNSFilter dashboard. MSP accounts can add Sites from the MSP Organization: just select the Organization for the Site during the setup.
- From the DNSFilter dashboard, navigate to Deployments and select Sites
By default first time users have a blank Site titled Your First Network. Edit this Site to establish your first network. - Select Add Site (to add a new Site), use the Actions menu to edit existing Sites
- Enter the following information:
- Name e.g. New York Office
- Description (optional)
- Policy/Schedule (select from drop down menu)
- Block Page (select from drop down menu)
-
IPs/DNS Hostnames
- Select Add my Current IP to enter the single IP address of your current location
- Select Add to add multiple IP addresses, e.g. multiple WAN links, failover links, etc.
- Follow Dynamic DNS instructions here if applicable
- Leave this field blank when only deploying a Roaming Client
- Address or Latitude & Longitude (optional): display information in the Geo Activity Map
- External ID (optional): this identifier enables integration with external services like Zapier, and identifies an Organization in Whitelabeled Partner accounts
- VPN compatibility toggle (optional): disables Roaming Clients associated with the Site when conflicting VPN agents are detected
- Select Save Site or Save to complete the updates
The Site is now ready to test on a single device (DNS Forwarding deployment) or associate with a Roaming Client.
