Use this article to understand what happens after deleting a Site or Deployment and why historical data may remain visible in the dashboard.
When a Site or Deployment is deleted:
- It is removed from active lists, including the Overview page, shortly after deletion
- Historical DNS traffic associated with that Site remains visible in reporting until it falls outside the selected reporting timeframe
Deleting a Site removes the active configuration but does not immediately remove historical reporting data.
Site deletion requirements
A Site cannot be deleted while it is still receiving DNS traffic.
Before deleting a Site:
- Confirm no other deployments—e.g., Roaming Client or Relays—are using the Site to connect to the dashboard
- Update network devices to stop forwarding DNS traffic to DNSFilter resolvers
- Point DNS traffic to a public resolver such as Cloudflare (1.1.1.1, 1.0.0.1) or Google (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) to maintain continuous DNS service
- Remove all IP addresses from the Site configuration
Once DNS traffic stops and the Site is no longer active, deletion can proceed.
Data retention in reporting views
Historical data remains visible until it ages out of the selected reporting window.
Examples:
- If the Overview page is set to display the last seven days, DNS traffic from the deleted Site remains visible until seven days have passed
- Organization-level and MSP dashboards continue to display historical activity until the data expires based on the selected date range
Changing the reporting timeframe updates whether deleted Site traffic appears.
If a deleted Site still appears
If a deleted Site appears unexpectedly:
- Confirm the reporting date range excludes time periods when the Site was active
- Refresh the dashboard
- Log out and back in if needed
If the Site continues to appear in active lists after deletion and refresh, contact Support for further review.
