The Roaming Clients dashboard is where users with admin permissions or higher view and edit agent settings, install and manage version updates, and uninstall or delete old agents. In both standard and MSP accounts, navigate to the Roaming Clients dashboard by selecting Deployments and then Roaming Clients.
Install Roaming Client
Select Install Roaming Client to download and install new Roaming Clients. Copy Site Keys from this drawer, which also includes Production and Beta agent download files.
Note: After a new Roaming Client release, the installer file may take up to 24 hours to become available. The dashboard always provides the versioned link for the current release.
Automatic Mobile agent registration
Automatic registration (7 days) registers mobile devices automatically when connected to a Site's network. This removes the need to enter the Site Key for mobile devices manually.
To enable automatic registration, select Automatic registration (7 days) in the Install Roaming Client drawer. When enabled, the toggle displays the registration window duration and an end date. Automatic registration remains active for seven days from the date it is enabled.
Automatic registration has no effect on Windows or macOS Roaming Clients, or the Relay application. It applies only to mobile-enabled accounts to support Android and iOS devices.
Before enabling automatic registration:
- Connect the device to the Wi-Fi network
- Make sure the device is connected to the IP address registered to a Site in the DNSFilter dashboard. Otherwise, registration can fail with the error message "Your IP address is not authorized"
- Android users: tap and hold Register Device in the mobile app to register automatically
- iOS users: tap Register Device. No hold is required
Clean Up
Select Clean Up to delete old Roaming Clients based on the last query traffic received from the device. This keeps user counts accurate when assessing usage and licensing. For more Clean Up information and a step-by-step guide, see Automate deletion of offline Roaming Clients.
MSPs can clean up Roaming Clients across all Organizations or filter to a specific Organization to complete the task from the MSP dashboard.
Select a time interval up to 365 days, or enter a custom inactivity duration. After the agents are identified, confirm the count and list of agents to delete.
Note: Large cleanup jobs can take some time to complete. Continue using the application while the clean up runs in the background. After the job starts, changes to any pending agents do not take effect and agent edits do not save.
Warning: Deleting agents requires
a type-to-confirm step. After reviewing the count and list of agents,
type DELETE in the confirmation field to complete the deletion.
Edit Roaming Client settings
Roaming Client settings can be updated Organization-wide from Control Center, or individually using bulk in-line edits.
Use Control Center when applying changes across the entire organization. Common use cases include:
- Configuring Automatic Updates
- Configuring Uninstall Notifications
Use bulk in-line edits when updating specific agents. Common use cases include:
- Assigning different Connection and Filtering modes by department
- Tagging agents
- Testing features with a limited group
- Setting users to Beta or Production release channels
Caution: Settings apply only to supported operating systems. For example, CyberSight collects user behavior analytics only on Windows agents v3.2 and higher. Unsupported agents do not apply the selected settings, even when they are configured in the dashboard.
Control Center options
Use the Control Center to:
- Access Roaming Client installation packages
- Use Clean Up
- Configure Connection and Filtering modes or CyberSight for the entire Organization (Windows v3.2 and higher)
- Enable or disable agent auto-updates
- Enable uninstall notifications for Windows and macOS agents
In-line editing options
Use bulk in-line edits to update:
- Site assignment
- Policy and schedule
- Block Page configuration
- Tags
- Connection and Filtering modes (supported OS only)
- Agent update settings (release channel and auto-updates)
- CyberSight (supported OS only)
Roaming Client Filters
Top-level drill-down
MSP accounts can view all Organizations' Roaming Clients in the default page view. Drill down into individual Organizations from three places: the page header, the Organization column, or from the Actions column.
To remove the filter, select the back arrow in the header menu.
Quick Filters
From both a Standard and MSP account, Roaming Clients can be filtered by Status. Select the related header to filter by All, Protected, Unprotected, or Offline agents.
Search bar
Use the search bar to filter for any attribute or string found in the agent list. For example, a search for 1.15 could return Roaming Clients with 1.15 in the Hostname as well as 1.15 agent versions.
Filters
Drill down into any column attribute using Filters. Add more filters to narrow the data set. Remove all at once with Remove All, or remove individually via the X in the filter menu.
Select a field from the dropdown menu to filter. The following table describes each field.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Hostname | The computer hostname when the agent was installed |
| Filtering Mode | Classic, Custom, or DNS PreCheck. All agents show a value, regardless of supported OS. Unsupported operating systems always display Classic (default) and cannot be updated. An upward-facing merge arrow icon indicates the agent is inheriting the organization-wide setting configured in the Control Center |
| Friendly Name | Assign a name to the agent |
| Status | Offline, Protected, or Unprotected |
| Last Sync | The last time the agent communicated with the DNSFilter API. View this in two ways: bucketed, by less than or greater than a specific time frame, or by local date and time. Select Last Sync (EST) to filter by date and time |
| Last Query Received | Quick access to currently connected agents |
| Agent OS | The agent's operating system |
| Version | The agent version currently running on the device |
| Last Logged in User | The user last associated with the agent |
| Site | The Network Site associated with the agent |
| Policy/Schedule | The Filtering Policy or Filtering Schedule associated with the agent |
| Auto Update | Whether an agent has auto-updates enabled |
| Release Channel | Whether the agent is on the Production or Beta release channel for updates |
| Tags | Any tags applied to the agent. Tags can be applied during installation or directly from the Roaming Client dashboard by editing the Tag field |
| Client ID | The agent ID |
| Device ID | The unique hardware ID |
| OS Name | The operating system the agent is installed on (for example, Windows 11) |
| OS Version | The version of the operating system the agent is installed on (for example, v1.2.3) |
| First Seen | The date and time the device first registered with the dashboard |
Note: If a field is blank, the setting may not be supported by the agent's operating system. For example, iOS agents do not report Last Logged In User, and Auto Update applies only to Windows and macOS agents.
Customize the dashboard view
Alongside all the filtering options, the Roaming Client dashboard also has several ways to edit how to view the agents according to your preferences.
Column layout menu
Use this menu to switch between preset column layouts.
- Default. The preset view set by DNSFilter until another view is saved. After changes are saved, the default view updates to the customized settings.
- All. Every available data column
- Editable. Highlights editable columns
- Status. Best for troubleshooting agent issues
Preferences
Refine the dashboard view with the following options:
- Toggle on or off specific columns. Toggle different columns to show or hide. Columns are searchable, and all options can be shown or hidden at once.
- Row density. Select how to view the rows: Compact (most dense), Standard, or Comfortable (least dense).
- Save view. All column customizations save to local browser storage. Switching to a mobile device or a different browser returns the settings to default. Reset the dashboard view with Use Default.
- Export Data. Export a full list of Roaming Clients to an inbox. All columns are included in the export regardless of which columns are shown in the dashboard.
- Refresh. Select Refresh to update agent data. Agent data does not refresh automatically.
The default view includes two pinned columns: Hostname and Actions. To pin an additional column, select Menu on the column header, then select Pin to left or Pin to right. Use the same menu to filter and hide columns.
Actions column
The Actions column provides quick access to view individual agent information, edit settings, and delete or uninstall a Roaming Client.
- Advanced Edit. Select Advanced Edit (the pencil) to view and update any editable fields. Select the disk icon to save changes or the X icon to cancel.
- More actions. Select More Actions (the three dots) to delete or uninstall individual agents, drill down into the agent’s Organization, and select View In Insights to open Insights reporting for that agent.
- Dropdown caret. Select the dropdown caret for an at-a-glance view of all the agent's information represented across the dashboard columns.
Select multiple Roaming Clients to edit or delete them at once. Selecting one or more clients displays Edit and Delete above the grid, and the number of selected clients. Select Edit to open the Bulk Edit Roaming Clients drawer.
Delete & Uninstall
The More actions menu includes Delete and Delete & Uninstall options. Uninstall is available on Windows agents v2.0.1 and higher, and may be made available to other compatible platforms in the future. Any other agent is deleted from the dashboard only.
Uninstalling does not prevent management platforms such as RMMs and MDMs from reinstalling a Roaming Client.
Warning: Deleting agents requires
a type-to-confirm step. After selecting Delete, type
DELETE in the confirmation field to complete the action.
