This article covers the required steps to configure a custom domain for MSPs as part of configuring a full custom-branded whitelabel experience for your clients.
For details on all the different configuration options, be sure to follow the steps found within MSP Whitelabel Configurations.
See the image below for an example of a client's browser when a custom domain and logo is used.
Setting up a custom domain is straight forward, and can be completed in 2 steps:
- Add a CNAME with your domain registrar for the custom whitelabel domain that points to cname.netalerts.io
- Enter your custom domain into the Custom Domain Mapping (CNAME) section on the Whitelabel configuration page
Once configured, DNSFilter staff will verify your CNAME change and update our servers in 1-2 business days.
Step one: Add a CNAME with your domain registrar
Follow these steps to create a new CNAME for the customer whitelabel domain. This CNAME should be unique/not too generic to avoid issues.
✍️ Every domain registrar has slightly different processes to complete this step. See your provider's documentation for specific guidance.
- Login to your domain registrar
- Create a new CNAME record - this is the domain to the custom whitelabel interface, e.g.
demomsp.filterdns.com
-
Hostname or prefix (without the domain name), e.g.
demomsp
-
CNAME destination, alias, or value - point the CNAME to
cname.netalerts.io
- TTL or time to live - the typical default is 1 hour
-
Hostname or prefix (without the domain name), e.g.
⚡️ Important ⚡️
If the CNAME does not point to cname.netalerts.io DNSFilter cannot complete the custom domain process.
Step two: Enter the custom domain in the DNSFilter dashboard
Follow these steps to add the CNAME domain to the DNSFilter dashboard.
- From the DNSFilter MSP dashboard, select MSP
- Select Whitelabel
- Toggle on Enable Whitelabel
- Enter a Dashboard Name. The name associated with the dashboard when accessed via customer domain. This is typically your company name
- Enter the Custom Domain Mapping. This is the CNAME's full domain, e.g. demomsp.filterdns.com
At this point you can select Save or continue to fill in the Whitelabel configuration to add Custom Logos (remember to use a transparent background) and email configurations.
Once saved, a request auto-populates for the DNSFilter Support team to complete the Custom Domain configuration, which typically takes 1-2 business days. They will contact you once the process is complete.
At that point your clients will then be able to login to your custom panel at the domain mapping you created!
