Use this article to deploy the DNSFilter Roaming Client on an Android device via single install or Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution.
The Android Roaming Client operates a VPN that forwards DNS queries to DNSFilter without routing other traffic through DNSFilter servers. This feature is available for Enterprise accounts.
The Android agent checks in every 5 minutes to detect available updates and identify offline agents.
Assign local domains before installing the Android Roaming Client to avoid internet connection interruptions.
Single device installation
Complete the following steps after creating a Filtering Policy, Block Page, and Site to associate with the agent.
⚠️ Important: Users can uninstall the Roaming Client unless the app is locked via MDM.
- From the DNSFilter dashboard, navigate to Deployments and select Roaming Clients
- Select Install Roaming Client
- Select the Site
- Select Android
- Download the Android Roaming Client from the Google Play Store
- Copy the Site Key
- Enable Auto Registration if applicable
- Open the app and enter the Site Key
- Enter a Hostname (optional)
- Select Register Device
- Select Start Filter
The app displays as On and DNS traffic routes to DNSFilter servers.
Deploy with an MDM
The Android Roaming Client is compatible with MDM solutions to enforce app installation and prevent end-user uninstalls. Refer to MDM and organization documentation for settings, version specifics, and deployment best practices.
Complete the following DNSFilter-specific steps as part of the MDM deployment:
- Create a Filtering Policy, Block Page, and Site to associate with the agent
- Download the Android Roaming Client from the Google Play Store in the MDM
- Enable Auto-Registration or enter the Site Key (see Single device installation, steps 6–7)
Lock the app from end-user edits to prevent uninstalls.
