Use this article to deploy the DNSFilter Roaming Client on an Android device via single install or Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution.
The DNSFilter Android App operates a special VPN which forwards DNS queries to DNSFilter, but avoids forwarding other traffic to our servers. Thus, the privacy of your data is ensured. This feature is available for Enterprise accounts.
Avoid internet connection interruptions by assigning local domains before installing the Android Roaming Client.
Moving to DNSFilter from another filtering service? Our team wrote up onboarding materials for migrating to DNSFilter that can help streamline the process!
Single device installation
Follow these steps to install the Android Roaming Client from the device after creating a Filtering Policy, Block Page, and Site to associate with the Agent. Note that users can uninstall the Roaming Client unless deployed and locked via MDM instructions below.
- From the DNSFilter dashboard, copy the Site Secret Key
- Navigate to Deployments and select Roaming Clients
- Select the Site
- Copy the Site Secret Key
- Download the Android Roaming Client on the device from the Google Play Store
- Enter the Site Secret Key
- Enter a Hostname (optional)
- Select Register Device
- Select Start Filter
The app will display as On and DNS traffic now points to DNSFilter servers.
Configure with an MDM
The DNSFilter Android app works with MDM solutions to enforce app installation.
Refer to your MDM and organization's documentation for settings, version specifics, and best practices for deployment.
Most MDM deployments require these basics steps involving DNSFilter:
- Create a Filtering Policy, Block Page, and Site to associate with the Agent
- Download the Android Roaming Client in the MDM from the Google Play Store
- Enable auto-registration or enter the Site Secret Key (steps above)
DNSFilter recommends locking the app from end-user edits to prevent uninstalls.
